Testing New Blogging Platforms For SEO Buffer Sites

Several new blogging platforms have launched, but are any of them suitable to be used as buffer sites for SEO? Read this post to find out the criteria!

New Blogging Platforms for Buffer Sites Picture

I manually build and update about 20 buffer sites for every client that I have. (A buffer site is a site built to assist with the SEO efforts of another site. Usually to pass link juice to the main site.)

All of my SEO buffer sites are high quality blogs or websites with unique content that I have created, they include images and videos, and they are each manually built and updated.

For low to medium competition keyword terms, my buffer sites tend to rank on the front page of Google along with my client’s site.

6 out of the 20 sites are built on WordPress.com, Blogger.com, and Tumblr.com. The other 14 are built on various other web 2.0 platforms. Weebly, Wix, Squidoo, sites like that.

Because of how effective they are in my search positioning strategy, I am constantly on the lookout for new blogging platforms that I can use to build quick and effective buffer sites.

Luckily, quite a bumper crop of new blogging platforms popped up this year. Some of them actually look pretty interesting and might be useful, and I have been eager to try them out.

This week I am going to test these new platforms and see if they meet my “blogging platform buffer sites criteria”.

Blogging Platform Buffer Sites Criteria:

buffer sites criteria

  • Needs to be free to use.
  • Needs to be quick and easy to setup.
  • Needs to allow post scheduling.
  • Needs to have SEO controllable features.
  • Needs to rank well in Google.

As I test each new blogging platform, I will let you know which ones made the grade, which ones didn’t, and why.

Blogging Platforms To Be Tested:

Here are some of the sites I plan to test. If you know of any other recently launched blogging platforms, please let me know in the comments, and I will test them as well.

Buffer Sites I Have Stopped Using:

Here are a few sites that made the grade at one point but they no longer work.

  • Blog – blogs have had errors for a few weeks
  • Posterous – closed
  • Blogetery – database errors
  • BlogDive – closed to new registrations

So, this week, I will be testing these sites and will let you know how each site did.

Some sites may prove to be wonderful blogging platforms but just not suitable for buffer sites, some may prove to be perfect for buffer sites, and some may prove to be not useful at all.

Please post in the comments if you have any other recommendations or any experiences with other buffer sites that may be useful!

  3. Thanks for all the in depth info. on buffer sites. Looking forward to your updates on the additional sites you will be testing.

  4. Hi Mindy,

Found your post very interesting. As a newbie to social media, I am not familiar with all these blogging platforms.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Ernestine

    • Mindy Koch says:

Ernestine, thanks for the comment! Even if you were experienced with social media, you probably wouldn’t be familiar with all, or even most, of these platforms. They are new and most of the internet marketers I know haven’t heard of them and aren’t using them. However, I have to say, of the few I have tried so far on the list – some of them are SO INSANELY easy to use. They may not meet the criteria for my use, but if I was a new blogger, I would be so tempted to use them. You will see in the follow up posts which ones I am referring to.

  5. Hi Mindy, Wonderful article. Looking forward to learning more about the sites you mentioned. Very educational post. Thanks so much!

  6. Ceci Mejia says:

Great. I will be testing them!!! thank you for sharing.

  7. Thanks a lot for the informative post! I’m looking forward to the results of your tests on those new platforms! I’m sharing your article on my SEO board on Pinterest!

  8. Buffer sites are a new term for me. I’ve always been taught that you want to own your online real estate i.e. the plug for WordPress.org. I certainly wouldn’t want to pour my heart and soul into posting article after article only to have the host of the site or “the powers that be” shut me down for internet marketing on their platforms. Have you found this to be the case, Mindy?

    • Mindy Koch says:

Carla, you are right. For your main site, yes, you do want to own the real estate. I definitely agree with that. And I do lose buffer sites that I have built. For example, when Posterous closed down, there went all the Posterous blogs I had built. However, for buffer sites, that is okay. If my main blogs had been on Posterous, that would have been devastating.

  9. Thanks for this list Mindy. I’ve got a couple of client sites that need some SEO juice so will be awaiting your verdict on whether these sites make the grade.

  10. Gary Hyman says:

This is a very helpful and informative post. Nice to know what works and doesn’t work in the blogging and buffer world. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  11. Klaudia says:

It’s perfect time to make a few plans for the future and it’s time to be happy. I’ve read this put up and if I could I wish to recommend you some fascinating issues or advice. Perhaps you could write subsequent articles relating to this article. I want to learn more issues about it!

  12. Couchexperts says:

Thanks for the list. I’m going to test these. However, I should say that as these platforms are pretty new, they are going to be monitored more closely and I wager that they check their link profiles once in a while.

So if one were to use these as buffers it would be wise to keep the second tier links velocity under the radar, if you know what I mean. There’s nothing that raises flags like 10K links to a page with 99% of the anchors related to “buy viagra online” when the site has under 1K natural links itself :P

    Best of luck!

  13. Norma Doiron says:

As a website builder myself, the biggest issue is to be able to have a blog that is visible & credible online. 95% of the platforms out there do not integrate what you need to get those results. THAT is the main reason why I choose WordPress.org…Can’t wait to see what you will discover in your testing…

  14. Hi Mindy, I am glad you found Passle and that you gave us a mention! Our whole idea is to help all those businesses who simply cannot keep an updated blog – only 1 in 8 can do it!

We try and help in two ways: First, we provide a bookmarklet button/Chrome extension that lets users capture a key piece of industry news and give their own expert take on it – we then compile it into a blog post (the captured text, expert comments, link to original article and an image from the article). Secondly, it is collaborative and so all the key people in the business can contribute using the button so that you get a breadth of knowledge and expertise from across an organisation – and not just one poor soul in the marketing department.

    Thanks Again!

  15. Meenakshi says:

    Hi Mindy,
So can the buffer sites only be a website or can they also be blogs created on blogger, blogspot or wordpress?

Also, does it help to buy old domains so that they have age and may be PR as well?

  16. Marcelo says:

do you have up date on your testing, great post, are you blasting them with links?

  17. Wendy SERP says:

Lovely to met you, My name Wendy. I wanna learn about SEO. First, I try to be blog walking to improve my knowledge about SEO.
And I really enjoy reading your post. Because it’s a new knowledge for me.
Thank for your share. you give me new knowledge about SEO and I’m so curious about it. I wait your new post in the future. Thank you for your attention !

  18. Marcelo says:

Mindy, do you have up date on your testing?

    blasting them with links?

  19. Hi Mindy – would love you to have a go at Passle now from your list. We just made a couple of really cool tools to it which you should give a go:

    1. Adding Tweets: When you create a Passle post – you can also grab in tweets to display alongside your post – this helps give context to your posts and makes them more engaging

    2. Thanks for the Tweets: Once you have added tweets to your posts, Passle creates a “Thank you” tweet that you can send to those whose tweets you used. This feature has just been launched and it is proving an amazing way to build engagement through retweets and replies and get more people reading your content.

Look forward to hearing how you get on!

    All the best

    Connor
