Bravo’s Top Chef…
Okay… I have been a devoted watcher of the tv show “Top Chef”.
Frankly… I have been puzzled for most of this season as to exactly why everyone on the show hates Marcel. Honestly… I don’t see anything there that is so loathesome. I actually really like the guy. Either there is some serious editing where most of his butt-headedness is on the cutting room floor… or it is just “Lord of the Flies”.
I think Betty hated him first and everyone just borrowed her irrational, over-the-top energy and fed on it.
ANYWAY… last week, Marcel gets physically assaulted by Cliff, with Ilan filming it and egging it on, and with Sam laughing watching it from the couch. His one and only “friend” in the house, Elia, doesn’t do anything to help him. In fact, she even calls out that she can’t come help (but she meant help CLIFF AND ILAN).
What is WIERD THOUGH… is that the storyline doesn’t seem to actually make sense!!!
When I rewatched it… ELIA is IN THE ADJACENT ROOM when Marcel is storming out!! AND SHE HAS HER HAIR!! She is kneeling on the floor covering up her face!!

SO… Marcel gets attacked FIRST… THEN Ilan and Elia shave their heads! In fact… I think they may have shaved their heads to “cover up” what happened to Marcel!!
Here is what I think happened…
I think Cliff decided to shave Marcel’s head as a mean-spirited fraternity prank. Ilan filmed it and Sam was watching from the couch not really sure how far Cliff was going to take it. I think Elia really is not wanting to be a part of the prank and is upset in the next room at what is happening to her “sort of” friend. Ilan calls for Sam and Elia to come help… and Sam doesn’t help, he just watches and laughs not really sure how far this is going to go. Elia calls out that she “can’t help” because she “can’t help them attack” Marcel. I think at this point, it is Cliff and Ilan who are the major players.
After Marcel storms out… I am willing to bet that he said that he was going to report this since he was attacked. Nothing on the footage backs up this supposition… it just seems the only logical explanation for the big “let’s act like we were drunk and were all going to shave our heads and just got a little carried away” scenario that I think plays out next.
So, they now put on this production… “hey, I am drinking a beer… see??” “hey, let’s shave our heads”, “I have always wanted to shave my head”, “you are too chicken”, “this is so fun”, little dramedy that follows.
I even think that they ALL decided to shave their heads because Elia says, Iwant to see ALL OF US with our heads shaved like this and Marcel (and then she makes a funny face showing Marcel with hair.)
I don’t really know how it played out… but I do know that it didn’t play out the way that Bravo producers made it look like it did. Frankly, I think they probably all should have been kicked off… but I think that the reason that Cliff got kicked off and no one else did is because he truly did attack Marcel BEFORE anyone else had shaved their heads. Or at least before Elia did.
I truly think Marcel was attacked first and the rest was all a big “acting” cover-up.
I think I am not the only person who thinks so either… I found a youtube post of at least one other person who thinks it went down in the order that I think it did. The youtube video is here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKHCCCZvhlQ. Also, I am glad to see that Headjudge Tom Colicchio also thinks they all should have been kicked off as well.
Also… I have to admit… I am disgusted with the way the other contestants “soft-balled” their descriptions of what happened. Cliff says, “I do feel bad for physically touching Marcel”. TOUCHING??? Hmm… interesting word choice. I would call it ASSAULTING. Holding him in a half-nelson with his feet about 8 inches off the ground??? Pressing him into the carpet?? If it would have been a woman, what would he have called what he was doing to her?? Hugging????
Frankly… at this point… I hope Marcel wins. I basically can’t stand ANY of the rest of them. PERIOD. Including Elia. I truly think she didn’t want any part of attacking Marcel… but later in the “fake frivolity” of the head shaving party… she sides with the bullies.
The Pursuit of Happyness…
Oooh man, what a GREAT movie!! Heart wrenching! Just excellent!!
Steve and I saw that last night and WOW it was just terrific! One of those movies where the audience applauds when it is over.
It sure made me feel like I can do anything!! It was so hard to watch Chris go through what he went through and keep it together. It was soo amazing!! I cried for joy with him when he cried for joy!!
Sure made me feel like I can overcome my obstacles and I can endure until I reach my goals!!
I have several I am working on… and now they need to be worked on with perseverence and passion.
One of course is getting in shape and getting fit… which I am posting about at ThinMin. The other of course is my business.
I can do it!!
Stone of Farewell…
All in all, it has been a wonderful lazy day. I have read Ender’s Game and this evening I was able to read “Stone of Farewell” Book 2 by Tad Williams.
It is a really good story, although in some places the plot seems to move along so slowly, and then in others (like at the end) it seems to zip along so quickly.
Tomorrow I need to go a major bookstore and get Book 3.
My daughter finished the “Warriors” books she is reading so she will probably need to pick up the next few in the series.
Honestly, some of my favorite memories of Christmas are receiving books and over the next few days, just getting comfy on the couch and reading them all. It is fun to see my daughter enjoying the same thing. Two birds of a feather, I suppose!

Books I have been reading…
Books were popular Christmas presents this year. I got two and my daughter got twelve. If you know me at all… TWO books isn’t nearly enough books for me. They are merely a paltry snack. But I have been enjoying them!
On Christmas night, I began reading “The Dragonbone Chair” by Tad Williams. Wow, great writing! I loved it and nearly completed it all in one sitting. I started it too late at night (around 9:30) and my eyes gave out about 3 AM. I picked it back up at 8:30 the next morning and had it finished by 10:00. I loved it and I eager to read the next book in the series!!
This morning I picked up “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card. I had read this and loved it as a teen and I gave it to my daughter (who is 13) for Christmas. I wanted to quickly reread it since I knew it would be awhile before she would get to it. She is currently reading the “Warriors” series. (It has feline characters… I haven’t read it yet.)
Anyway, the book was as good as I remembered. I was surprised by the profanity though. Actually VERY surprised. I don’t see why adults feel the need to include profanity in books written for young teens. It is disturbing. It seems especially unnecessary considering how long ago this book was written. Back in the mid-80′s we were including profanity in young adult books? That is unfortunate. It seems as though adults just want to push kids into adulthood so quickly. Of course, I probably notice it more than most readers because I was raised in a house with parents who never swore and as an adult I have tried to emulate that.
Another young adult book I just recently read is called “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer. WOW… I mean WOW! I had low expectations and actually was reading it to measure appropriateness for my daughter to read. I read it TWICE in one weekend. It was SOO engrossing and the love story between the two main characters was enthralling.
My sweet husband stopped by a bookstore and picked up book 2 of the Tad Williams series so I hope to start that this evening sometime. I hope it is as enjoyable as the first one!

Packages Mailed…
Okay, it is silly what a big deal this is… but I go my Christmas packages mailed finally!!
What a huge relief!! I was so happy afterwards I just sat in the “X” (my Ford Expedition) and let the “happy, happy, joy, joy” settle all over me!
Packages mailed… what a good feeling!
Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree…
How lovely are your artificial, already-lit, fluffed out and plugged in branches!
Yes, we did it… we got the Christmas tree up tonight!!
We didn’t decorate it yet, that is for tomorrow, we just set it up and fluffed it and plugged it in as we listened to Mannheim Steamroller. The one that starts with “Deck the Halls”… it is my FAVORITE Christmas music.
Although, I am really digging Eclipse’s “Three Kings”… Nice!!
But I digress…
So, we got the Christmas tree up, turned it on, turned out all the lights in the home, and sipped hot cocoa as we discussed our thoughts on our Christmas plans.
Hopefully we will do at least two service projects of some sort, a Christmas cookie baking night, a graham-cracker gingerbread homes night, and some caroling. Need to get it all mapped out on a calendar.
We really took advantage of “Black Friday” and got a large percentage of our Christmas shopping for the kids done, so we are ahead of the game for now.
I love Christmas!!
